Steve. You should be able to pre-fit everything by sliding, piece by piece, each component on to the shaft. Don't bother with the keys at this time, just see where it all lines up. I've disassembled and reassembled several MU2 and LU2 winches as well as some larger ones. It's really very simple. You should have little or no shaft extending beyond the housing or the support arm.
