I bet you could put 10,000 lbs on the rear end of a WC and not bend the frame. I think the worst that would happen is you'd blow the tires out. I bet even all those old 1950s Chevy farm trucks that are still rattling around could take that kind of abuse without bending their frames.
But you're right most people don't abuse their trucks like that. Heck, most Silverados have probably never been hitched to any trailer at all, or had even 1000 lbs in the bed.
