I was taught by an old glass guy that after scoring the glass and putting a little pressure to break the glass along the score to pour alcohol into the new crack and light it. When the alcohol flame was out to gently flex and the plastic would tear.
He would use only a little alcohol, and would look from the side as the flame was nearly impossible to see.
I cannot say if this would lead to premature "blistering" of the edges. Black 80 grit wet Silicon Carbide to smooth the edges can cut back enough to where the plastic laminating material should be of normal thickness.
