My TC needed 1/4" of spacers added to the front mounts to get the u-joint angles copacetic. Nothing looked bent, so I wonder how crooked it was from the factory? Or frame sag? Or maybe it was set up to be good at the maximum load?

The only technical tool I used was athe protractor head from the three-piece set of combination square. Ya know, the combination head, the find-the-center of a rod head, and the protractor with the bubble. Make a sketch of a drive line with all six u-jionts allowed for, and check all of the angles from level, and which direction they are not level from. Both ends of each shaft ought to be the same. They may be positive on one end, and negative on the other. Do some cogitating as to where to shim what, in which direction. Shimming the front of mine downwards by adding four 1/2" fender washers made the intermediate shaft and rear shaft good. I figured not to worry about the front shaft. But later I checked it, and it was good too!

Also check the 'clocking' of each shaft's slip joint. The two axes(axii? axes? axi?) that are one the 'shaft' should be parallel, NOT perpendicular. Think of how a double-cardan constant velocity joint looks.

Plus, check to make sure your body is not touching the frame and transmitting noise/vibration. The worst place for that is the flange around the hole in the floor. It will actually rub so hard and for so many years that the frame has a notch in it. I added some 3/8" thick aluminum discs at the body mounts, then also needed to make a 3/8" shim to fit under the radiator support to get the hood to align.

Then wavy washers at each end of the transfer case shift rods, to silence that clanking noise.

All of that, and I don't need to wear earplugs on the freeway! Though I do get a bit of voice strain if I have a passenger to talk to, on a long ride. But maybe my voice box is out of alignment? Maybe a wavy washer in my adenoids...
