Dave, knowing what your truck or tranny is would help. First you lucky duck. Why get ride of the 5spd... is it an NP540? I have a 57 NP540. I took off the brake drum and flange and replaced it with a yoke (see below) and the rear retainer still has the e-brake mounts on it or you could find a rear retainer without. I had to have the yoke honed slightly. The combo U-joint fits the yoke in one direction and my old drive shaft in the other. This combo joint may be hard to find. I have a 64 TWPW. The NP540 has a 1.38" dia. 10 spline and the NP435 has a 1" dia. 10 spline, so you need to change the clutch. An NP420 or NP435D should fit. Some NP420s have the 1.38 shaft, but no syncros in 1st and 2nd. Most truck bells are drilled for 3,4 and 5 spds... mine is. For a 59 it should be the Hydrl. bell which fits hemis, polys and LA blocks, well I think. If it is the larger Clark or ?? trans then I don't know about the bell. You may need a poly bell from 1/2T TO 1T. Make sure to get a Dodge 4spd (NP435D) and check the length of the input shaft. 3 of the 4 the bolts for a 540 and 435 are the same pattern. They both have a .75 pilot shaft. I have an NP435 that I took out, but I think I'll keep it.
