You are confusing axle length with the differential. It is the differential that splits the power between the two axles, and the two sets of bearings. The down side of a short axle is that there is less length for the flexing to occur in, meaning more breakage due to fatigue. The flexing may be axial due to torsion, or radial due to misalignment of hub to differential. The up side is room for the extra PTO shaft, plus a slight advantage of allowing the rear differential hump to travel in the groove left in the mud by the front hump.
