The fact is, things just aren't that bad in this country yet for most people. What most people care about is their own personal economy, not their rights, freedoms, morals, etc. So long as they're doing okay in terms of money, they don't pay attention to the government.

This recession is unique in that it's hurting the billionaires way more than it's hurting the ordinary working stiff (which is why the government is trying so frantically to fix it). The media have been scouring the country looking for stories about factory closings and families being evicted, but the freeways are still jammed with cars, the shopping malls are still full of shoppers, and the fat geese in the city park still aren't running away from people.

I think a lot of the economic bad news hype last fall was just designed to get Obama elected. I don't know about you, but nobody I know lost any money when Lehman Brothers collapsed and all those other banks and brokerages were forced to merge. Now we're supposed to believe that the government needs to borrow $10 trillion or so from our descendants in order to prevent the collapse of civilization, even though from everything I can see with my own eyes, the worst you can say about the economy right now is business is a little bit slow. I've seen it a lot slower in the early '80s and in Seattle during the Boeing recession.

If things get bad enough that most Americans lose their television, either through poverty or the collapse of the industry and infrastructure that makes it happen, then maybe we'll see a revolt, something like Coxey's Army. We're still a long way from that, though.
