on big diesels for the post office was to offer air starters. the truck compressor charges a tank and the only voltage required is to open a solenoid and release air to the starter. we had a bunch of em and the only problem was chasing air leaks and draining the tanks. the theory was the PO wanted no sparks on trucks at the airport. you could 'jump' one truck with another's air brake line. in practice, a three battery bank and short wire runs are the best way to start the big engines. adding the 24/12 adds another complication. my boat has a huge by large diesel and starts easily off of a group 27 batt that has 2' cable runs. with a batt switch and an isolator, ive never had a starting, charging or run down problem. if you go 12v in your m, keep your stock parts. your truck will turn out nicer than you think and you will maybe want to make it more orig over time.
