Some of the hydraulic systems can 'pump up' like a lifter. Or, like all those guys with mal-adjusted master cylinder push rods, is the push rod too tight?

You sure are right about body twist, especially with a loosened up 50 year old frame. I once had a '41 1/2t open cab in a creek, the bed was twisted 45 degrees in it's 6ft length. Starter push rod so bound up, I couldn't restart it. I had to hand crank in knee deep water. Then, the clutch pedal wouldn't release, I would reach down, and pull it up with my hand, in first gear. It would lurch forward, un-twist the body, clutch would pop, and stall the engine. Get out, wade around to the front, yank the crank, repeat... very funny, for those of you with a twisted sense of humor.

Later models went to the different starter push rod, not directly linked to the starter. At least my feet would have stayed comfortable. This, for those of you with a dry sense of humor.
