The original wood for my '48 B-1-PW is long gone. So I do not have a reference to check. If the metal piece that you make is thick like the one that I made, you would probably want to recess it into the wood. Junior can verify if the plate was recessed or not. I lost my coverplate sometime after I started working on my truck many years ago but I remember it was wrinkled and bent from years of hard use here on the farm.
