yes there is a difference. The short axle shaft in the original axle is more prone to break. Best way to describe it is. As the power is applied to the axle from the diff the axle shaft will twist due to the torque that is applied. The difference is that the short axle has less length to absorb/distribute the twist from the torque so it tends to reach the breaking point quicker than the long axle shaft. Recently somebody (? Will) posted a picture of a twisted axle. That is how they break. Having a centered axle gets rid of the short axle shaft and apparently provides enough length to better absorb the torque. The only reason for the offset axle as I understand was to allow for the belt pully shaft. An option that obviously did not meet sales projections. Another advantage of the centered axle is that both axle shafts are the same length and you do not have to carry 2 different axles along.
