I did as Bob suggested. I removed the hot lead to the brake light signal switch and pressed the brake pedal. The headligths stayed bright and the ammeter needle didn't drop excessively. The hot lead wire is a frayed mess. There were several sections of exposed wire in the vicinity of the switch. I taped up what I could get to easily and reconnected the lead. The lights dimmed again. I'll trace the wire to find out where it is grounding.
