I used a high density plastic to make mine. Wood will absorb water plastic will not. The running board supports rust out often and it is due trapped moisture.
The high density plastic comes in 1" sheets. I cut the width and length I needed and then drilled and countersunk them and screwed them together with a stainless screw to get the 2" thickness.
