Stock 50xx or 51xx (chromium)
Stock 40xx or 41xx (moly, chromoly)
Tibus 43xx (nickel-chromoly)
Moser 13xx,41xx (manganese)
Dutchman 15xx (carbon)
Yukon 15xx,43xx
Superior 15xx,43xx
Found these numbers on the web. Most OEM used 1040 or 1050 carbon steel for their stuff. The aftermarket numbers were for moly up front and carbon on the rear.
Tibus likes the nickle, which is close to stock, but probably stronger. Dodge shot peened their PW axles for strength, which has proven to be a good idea. They've held up well, even with some V8s.
When I worked at my other job, our axles were generally made from 1541H. But it all comes down to the hardening process. I think that's where things start to seperate.
Given that Tibus was making a product specifically for us, I'd guess that his choice would be the best. Is he still making them?
