I can see rivets clamping force getting "tighter" when cooling as it shrinks but it would seem to me it would get looser on the sidewalls. Nitpicking I know but metal shrinks as it cools correct? I think most riveted stuff today(frames anyway) are done without heat and avoids this. The smashing force fills all the irregularities of the hole making it better than the bolt as David said.
