Dave,

177 Elk were stocked between 1913 and 1926. They came from the Rocky Mountain Herd. In 1971 there were an estimated 65. In 2005 700 were counted. They have been hunted for several years now. Last year there were 45 hunting permits issued.

They are a nuisance along the roads, but the area they are in is very rural. They have tried to move them further across the state but they tend to migrate back to their home territory in Elk and Cameron county.
