I don't know any people who are opposed to elk reintroduction per se, their worry has to do with a potential increase in auto accidents because of the program. Some of the comments here are encouraging regarding the elk's behavior being different with cars.
The number of whitetail deer in the east now is incredible; accidents are a daily thing now, sometimes with human fatalities.
The guy at the local body shop told me the warmer winters we have been having the last twenty years (and thus less accident damage from ice/snow) have been more than compensated for by the deer for the body shops profitability.
