I like the idea of actually measuring rather than guessing. For this to work, the fuel problem needs to be upstream of the carb, but unless the fuel is cut off for more than a few seconds, the fuel in the bowl should be enough to carry it through. For it to work on the electrical side, the problem has to be upstream of the coil, you need an a.n.a.l.o.g volt meter because a digital one won't respond fast enough, but the needle of an a.n.a.l.o.g meter will bounce around because of the bump, so it might be hard to see the difference. A small light bulb might work, and wouldn't be affected by bumps. Still, if the bad connection (short or open) is inside the coil, in the coil to points wire, or in the high voltage wiring, the meter won't show it.

I think a visual inspection, followed by wiggling and banging on various things with the engine idling, is a good first test, because it's easy, but your suggestions are good if it's necessary to dig into it more deeply.
