Steering box question

Ok, so i know I'm skipping around on projects, but I did find out that as a State employee, even though I'm public safety, I am getting a 10% paycut, and will be furloghed two days a month, so as far as skipping around, I'm trying to do things to keep me busy that don't take too much money.

So anyway, yesterday and today I took apart my original steering box and the one from my new frame.

My donor box is in what i would call very good shape. No rust inside, the gear oil was clumpy, but stull had everything well lubed. All the bearings are good, the tube is good, the shaft with the three teeth that turn the wheels from the worm gear is my question. It has small wear dimples on both sides of all three teeth. Is this going to affect my steering??

The original box, now thats another story. It was dried up, with about a cup full of rust, acorns, (the top cap was missing), and who nows what else. Now the shaft with the three teeth on that one is severley rusted and pitted. I mean it would take some grinding to get the pitts out. BUT I cleaned up the teeth and there are no wear dimples on them.

Suggestions??

Also, , I assume that since there are "shims" on the bottom cap, its not advisabe to use gasket material. But I havent been able to find the shims. Now the gasket on the other plate with the adjusting screw, I can use gasket material there right??

Thanks. And please forgive the skipping around on projects. I just wanna keep doing somethin'!!

Nick
