you might want to consider a pertronix kit if your need is just to go electronic to rid yourself of points and improve starting & running & basic performance. i don't recall you having a race truck or performance car, so likely electronic 'points' are what you need. i know that moparnorm has a lot of reasons to use the mopar kit which i dont recall - search the archive or ask him directly. he & i got into a friendly debate about it in times past, but my experience with petronix in my business and my hobby is that you install it once and then take ignition out of the maint equation for the most part. we've likely used over 75 of them on everything that will take one and cant remember a problem. i remember getting new gmc delivery trucks with 366 gm gasser motors in the 80s(they had np 540s with ODs - and no i didnt know to keep any) and installing the petronix (they were called something else then, iirc) before the trucks hit the road. it was standard procedure for our new trucks to spend a week in our shop getting ready for service. we tightened every bolt, installed a secondary ignition kill switch & did a lot of tweaking to ensure that our truck breakdown percentage was the lowest in the industry. we weren't concerned about gas mileage then.
if you go with the mopar kits from summit, they offer orange, black and i think silver 'brains' to provide difft levels of performance. they all use the same electronic dist so you are either getting a really high performance dist for street use or a high performance street dist for race use. i guess the dist just provides the trigger and the brain does the rest. they also offer one that has modern electronics in a vintage look case. i took mn's chiding to heart and researched it a bit. the mopar kit replaces the trigger and gives you a 'brain'. the pertronix uses the dist chrysler specified for your engine and provides an electronic update with the features taken from their website: *
