I was surprised to see Frantz is still in business and still selling toilet paper oil filters. What I learned from their web site is that they are expensive ($150-$200, not counting the cost of the toilet paper), their instructions still show an installation on a 1970-vintage car, and most importantly that it's a bypass filter to be added to the factory full-flow filter. It probably doesn't allow enough oil through it to be used as a full-flow filter. They claim, of course, that it filters better than a spin-on filter. Perhaps it does, since flow rate isn't important with a bypass type filter. The question then becomes how much oil actually goes through it. They claim the entire contents of the crankcase will go through it in 7 minutes, but I find that hard to believe.

In any case, since it's used as a bypass filter in addition to a normal filter, it can't hurt anything, but neither will it save you money on filters. On an old engine wher the factory filter is a bypass type, it's hard to say how much oil would go through the Frantz unit. Probably very little if the resistance of it was higher than the stock filter. Then you'd have to consider whether you want to completely replace the stock filter and rely on it for all your filtering. If I found one laying around, I'd be inclined to try it on a truck that already had a full flow filter, but I wouldn't pay $200 for one.
