On the old-style M35s with the sprag (automatic) transfer case, the front and rear are deliberately mismatched by 8%. I believe the front turns faster than the rear, or would turn faster if it weren't for an overrunning clutch that lets it slip. When the rear starts spinning, making it turn faster than the front, the sprag locks up and drives the front, albeit at a speed 8% slower than the back. Obviously this is a special design, but it IS possible. The 8% difference in speed when locked up is not a problem because it only locks up on slippery surfaces.
