To maintain viability in our domestic market, something on this order will probably have to happen. A merger or buyout of any description by GM would mean liquidation because of so much duplication of products and excess plant capacity.
The very negative history of Fiat cars here would be a strong reason to for them to acquire a manufacturer with a strong, positive history in the US market. Worse things could happen.
