My variation on that theme for finding vacuum leaks is to take
a propane torch, unscrew the burner tip (but keep the valve assembly),
put a 2' piece of vacuum hose on the end of it, turn on the propane
a bit, and poke the end of the hose around any place there might be a
vacuum leak. I also "sniff" around any vacuum diaphrams like the vacuum
advance, and smog gizmos since these things often spring leaks. If the
propane is getting sucked into the engine, it will speed up. I like
the propane and hose method because it is clean and precise but in a pinch
I too have used starting fluid.
