I was able to fill up mine when I originally rebuilt her with (then new) military fluid (I did a pass in review in exchange)
Other than leaking due to seals, I've had no problems.

One time I gained a GALLON jug, as my driver had to top off his CUCV, and they wouldn't let him return the jug after it was opened. (Guess they thought of it as DOT 3, absorbing water from the air following opening)
Anyhow, there should be NO difference in the DOT 5 on the market, and the DOT 5 in the military.
Now there may be a shelf life written on the stuff, but it all depends on how it was stored (just like C-rations or MRE's) They can still be perfect, but it's rotated out to have fresh, just in case.
Sort of like replacing the 3/4 ton truck with an M37.... Why? well, just to keep the market employed is my take.

Ok, so it was waterproof, etc. but why replace the M37 with the ________ (715 Jeep truck Ugh!, Civilian pickup, Ugh twice... Humvee... NOT!)

Use it if it's cheaper, just don't shake it up, as it keep's the bubbles in suspension, and transfers them into your lines.
