Volkswagen 12-volt sending units can be modified to work in your 6-volt system. I forget what the part number is, but they work on variable resistance related to the position of the swing arm. You may be able to pirate the resistance wire pack from one of them to rebuild your original unit or simply modify the whole VW sending unit to work. By the way, the mounting holes are nearly a perfect fit on the tank opening. Good luck.
