I agree with Aaron, do your home work, we are assuming that you are working on a W-500. I own a 74 D-600 and I run a bunch of 5-ton civilians with 4 speeds, Chev, C65-70 tandems with 427's, 5 sp box with a 4 sp aux. An overdrive would be very worth while, if not, you still end up at 1:1 on the top end and a whole lot of lower gears. Price would only be relevant, only when you know for sure what you are buying.
