My grandpa used to burns cobs (as in corn cobs) in a bushel basket under the IH farmall M to get it started on really cold days. This was before electricity and tank heaters.
He needed to get it started on really cold days to pull the 10 foot Railroad rail through the corn field. This was a poor man's stock cutter. The corn stocks would break off right at ground level.
