Your question "I have used wirefeeds for years and stick a couple times. But I dont know squat about the types of voltage they use. Are they AC or DC? Both? Can an old stick welder be converted to run a spool gun type wire feed? If no why not?"

Is completely devoid of any intelligent information necessary to answer it.

However, in an attempt to answer your question, wirefeeders use BOTH AC and DC as well as pulsed current, square wave and sawtooth wave in different aplications.

Since you don't specify what old welder you want to convert, the question can't be answered. Lets go with the supposition you want to convert a simple Lincoln AC 225 AC out transformer machine to weld aluminum with a spoolgun or even a suitcase feeder. Can it be done, absolutely, but the cost will be about $10,000 to do the job.

Suitcases today and some spoolguns come with the ability to be powered by either CC or CV power units, but I'm not willing to spend my time explaining the difference for your entertainment.

When you're done with your "welding" please be so kind as to paint the item you "welded" fluorescent orange and equip it with strobes so oncoming traffic knows to stay well clear of your roving junkpile.
