Not sure if there's anything you can use on this site, but you can spend a lot of time looking around and some very practical and creative uses of all sorts of heavy equipment, old and new. There's some discussion of transmission and engine swaps in heavy military trucks, but I didn't read it in detail to see what exactly he did.
They use an M123C as a logging and equipment-hauling truck, and they also have an M911 they've used the same way. There's quite an interesting discussion of them and good pictures:
