I run an M-819 wrecker with a 40 ft. lowboy.
We loaded it up to 80,000 lb.s - You think you have power problems. LOL We got it up to about 40-45 mph max.
Sure the gear splits are bad, but it is a 2 prong problem. Check out the Steel Soldiers 5 ton forum, some guys with time and money are dropping in a 400 hp cummins with an auto trans.
Sure an auto trans might work better to solve the gear splits, but you (and I) are still short on power.
I run 5 of the M-800 series, and they really work great loaded upto about 48,000 gvw, but over that, they dog out.
