I almost never lock anything, but about a month ago I noticed my angle grinder and small chainsaw were missing from the garage. I usually leave the door open when the weather is good and I'm going in and out a lot. The grinder was a worn out POS anyway, but the saw was my best 14" echo arborist saw that I had just tuned up and gotten running really well. For some reason, he didn't take the big Stihl right next to it. I'm 99% sure the thief was my neighbor's grandson who likes to talk to me about my rigs when he's visiting his grandma. I always thought he was kind of shifty and his eyes were looking things over while he was acting interested in my current mechanic project.

The trouble here is everybody knows he's a thief. Everybody knows the guy who fences his stuff is a thief. The pawn shop owner knows they're both thieves. The cops know they're both thieves. The kid's mother, whom he lives with, knows he's a thief. And yet nobody stops them. I haven't seen the kid since my stuff disappeared (also kind of suspicious), so I haven't had a chance to say anything to him. Not sure what I'd say anyway. I wouldn't say anything to grandma. She's a sweet old lady. Raised 8 kids, 2 of them now dead (one murdered), and has gobs of grand-kids, most not living around here. I've only met two of them, and neither one impressed me much. It's not a matter of hard times with these thieves. They're all drug addicts stealing so they can buy dope. I wish we'd just legalize the dope so they could fry their brains without having to steal from the rest of us.

It's sad when we have to lock things up. I still don't lock my house very often because the lock's hard to work, and I suppose I'll regret that someday too. I also wish I knew what it would take to get these known thieves arrested, locked up, and made to pay restitution.
