Now I am confused. Does the number on the lock ring have to match the number on the rim, or not? Can one buy replacement lock rings and not worry that the number no longer matches that which is on the wheel that the new ring will be mounted to?

I thought the tire shops always knew to change one tire at a time and to keep each lock ring with its mating rim?

I have never done this work myself, and I have always trusted that the professionals knew what they were doing. Should I be there to watch the next time I have new tires mounted, and what mistakes should I be watching for? This is scary stuff.
