David I am not sure your part is cast steel, but more likly cast iron. An easy way to tell is by using a grinder and watch the sparks comming off of it.
The cast iron sparks will be short dull red about 20" long compared to steel that are white and at least twice as long with small sparklers along the length of the main streamers at 45o. Try the spark test on some known metals and you will see the difference.
