I don't know why, but I don't like AR15s. I have one, and I only keep it because I have a .22 adapter in it to shoot .22s cheaply. I've never been a fan of black guns. I know lots of guys really like them and put all kinds of accessories on them, but I like a gun with a blued or parkerized steel receiver and a wood stock. Plastic and aluminum just don't seem right to me.

Either kind of M1 is a great looking gun, and Garands are great shooters. 1903s look and shoot real good too. The AKs are bare bones git-r-done tools that are easy to work on and always work right, something any old truck guy can appreciate. The Com-bloc engineers may not have designed very good cars or televisions, but they designed very practical weapons, aircraft, and spacecraft -- machines that did the intended job well and didn't have any fancy extras to go wrong. AR15s remind me of SUVs or H2 "Hummers" somehow. I know they're decent rifles, if fussy about maintenance. Maybe they're just too modern for me.

By the way, the PW Forum special price on AK47 bayonets, which make a dandy general-purpose knife and includes a wire cutter feature, is $12 cash or check, plus postage. Leave ebay and paypal out of the loop. I also finally found some 1873 light bulbs, which are the brightest 24 volt ones that fit the small size holders. I use them for the panel lamps in my M35s. They're almost 10 times as bright as an 1819.
