Think of it the old fashioned way. You consign a truck to a real auctioneer, some outfit like James G Murphy (in Seattle). They put it in their catalog for the upcoming auction. Several guys see the picture and think they might like to buy it, so they drive over to Woodinville to the auction. The time comes for your truck go up on the block, and the auctioneer starts his spiel. Bids are coming in, but then the phone rings and it's you calling up from home to say you just sold the truck to a guy who drove by and saw it in your yard.

How do you think the guys who went to the auction would feel? Do you think James G Murphy Co would let you get away with it? There is undoubtedly language in their contract that says that once you consign it to them to sell, they WILL sell it and you WILL deliver title to whomever they sell it to. No calling up in the middle of the bidding to say you changed your mind.

Again, I'm not defending ebay, but if you list something on an auction site, you should follow through and sell it to the highest bidder. If you want to just advertise it in various places with some asking price, that's a whole different deal, but an auction is an auction.
