I figure one of three things will happen: It will dissolve in the gas and go away, it will soak up the gas but not dissolve and will sink, or it will not dissolve and won't soak up any gas. In the first two situations, I'll know because the gauge will read "E", and no harm will be done. In the second, I will have saved the time and hassle of finding or fabricating and attaching a better float. If the sender was hard to get to, I wouldn't try this rinky-dink experiment, but I don't have to take anything apart to get to it, so it's no trouble if I have to re-do it.
