Rearend problem

I am new to this... and starting with a '48FFPW. The rear wasn't hooked up, and when I hooked it up, the rear shaft either turns the wrong way, or the rear diff (initially a front) has something wrong with it, as the wheels turn the wrong direction for the gear. So in 4WD, all wheels would turn in.... how do I fix this?
