It starts rough. I have to pump the gad 5 - 6 times before turning it over. Then I have to pump the gas a lot as it catches. Then it will sputter along at really low rpm's. After about 10 - 15 seconds it gains some strength (rpm's come up), it bellows out the rich exhaust, and it runs smoother. I have to hold the throttle down a little to keep it from stalling for the first 3 - 5 minutes. The rough starts seem to be true in warm and cold weather but worse in cold weather. I do have the choke cable on and functional and it is pulled closed for starting and warm up. Carb is a Carter E7T2 which has not been rebuilt.

Once before it was warmed up and running smooth and then suddenly stalled. That was a loose connection in the distributor. Day before yesterday it was warm and running smooth and stalled when I started from a stop in 2nd gear - down hill. When I tried to start it again the battery was dead so it may have been running off of the battery instead of the alternator. The battery was good when I started it that day - fresh off the charger.

For the rough starts I have checked the plugs and spark. Plugs are a little dark but they are dry with good gap. There is spark at the plugs. I have not checked compression with a meter but I think it is probably ok - the engine turned over backwards when the truck was pulled backwards in first gear.

As for parts replaced - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery, coil, and alternator. Ignition is aftermarket but not new to me - works fine. Starter is original and works great when the battery is up.

Electric fuel pump (yes, I saw the discussion - I didn't have a mechanical one to put on it) - seems to be providing plenty of gas. I don't know what pressure it's pushing - maybe a little too much because I often see a little gas seeping out from the bottom of the carb. That is usually when I've been trying to start it. Because of the hard starts, I pulled the carb off and found a puddle of gas sitting in the intake manifold. I mopped some of that out and it started a little easier.

No offense taken at your rebuke Dave. Suites me right for such a vague complaint.
