It should NOT require "several solid hits to disengage". Try bringing the truck to a stop, then backing it up for a few feet until the lever moves freely. This helps to release any binding in the gears due to axle ratio differences, turning, etc. If this doesn't help, you may have another problem, such as improperly matched gears. JH
