The problem of national healthcare is simply an iteration of "tradgedy of the commons".

When people think that something is free they will want more of it. Since there is not an unlimited supply of the product and market forces do not apply then the mediator (the government) resorts to rationing the available resource.

This is where you get into the situation where you have access to healthcare but it is just not available.

If you want your ingrown toenails to be taken care of then you want to live in a country with nationalized healthcare. If you need cancer surgery or heart surgery or any other advanced care then the best place to be is the U.S. of A.

Claude Castonguay the "Founder of the Canadian Healthcare System" recently said...

“We thought we could resolve the system’s problems by rationing services or injecting massive amounts of new money into it,” says Castonguay. But now he prescribes a radical overhaul: “We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice.”
