Those modern little in-line fuel filters should not harm anything if they are installed correctly. However, they may be more apt to increase the chance of vapor lock when placed too close to the manifold. Most of the ones I have removed were added to steel fuel lines that had been simply cut with a hacksaw, leaving sharp edges to tear off pieces of hose, as mentioned below.

If someone has a damaged or missing internal carbureter filter element, or a broken or missing external ceramic filter and is having trouble finding a replacement, by all means, correctly install an in-line filter.

It just seems that most of the times when these types of filters were added to our trucks, it was because the previous owner was trying to "quick filter" an overly dirty fuel system instead of cleaning it properly.

David Sherman understood my point exactly in his post below on 12/14/08 at 22:12:27. Those who add and/or swap componants to their trucks in order to get them to out perform their original design intent should not feel insulted by my opinions. I was referring to those in general who are too quick to discard perfectly capable parts simply out of lazziness or because of a lack of understanding of the problem.
