Thanks to all for your follow up. I will take all of this good advice and see if I can't iron this problem out. The truck runs good at idle and starts up well without burning oil. The plugs are new, the old plugs were light brown with no burnt electrodes. There is a hesitation that still exists at the lower end of the throttle that was improved on by fixing two significant vacume leaks (the carb was loose and the vacume line going from the manifold to the crankcase had a major hole burnt into it from the exhaust-also fixed)...Could these vacume leaks account for someone advancing the timing to get better performance VS fixing the leaks themselves?
