I've never heard a knock described as a "chirp" before, but if it's running smoothly and has full power, but makes a noise under load, especially at lower RPMs (lugged down), that's likely an ignition knock. It's easy enough to retard the timing a bit to see if it quits. When I was driving my old Chevy truck back and forth between Idaho and Seattle a lot, I'd actually advance the timing when I had Idaho gas in it, and retard it so it would quit knocking when I had to fill it up with Washington gas, which is more of an "anti-pollution" blend. So, that's your first test. Just stop at the bottom of the hill, twist the distributor in the direction that slows the engine down a little, and give it another try and see if your "chirp" goes away.

On the other hand, if it's actually running rough or losing power under load, but idles fine, it's probably starving for fuel, because of a clogged filter, carb jet, or a failing fuel pump.

Either way, you shouldn't drive it like that very much or you'll likely do some damage to the engine.
