The problem is that there haven't been significant concessions on the part of the UAW yet.
As long as they believe that the government will bail them out they will continue to act solely in their own short term interest and against the long term health of the auto industry.
One thing is certain in a global economy with low import tariffs. It will be a race to the bottom as far as wages are concerned in industries whose products rely heavily on semi-skilled labor.
Not only have the Japanese learned how to produce high quality manufactured goods, but so have the Koreans, and now hot on everyone's heels are the Indians and the Chinese.
Consequently, there is a coming glut of manufacturing capability in the world and the durability of the products produced is improving with each generation.
And this folks is only the start.
