I tend to agree with part of what you said, but regarding the electric fuel pump I believe they served a purpose. My Dad bought a new 1955 FFPW shortly before we moved to Moab that same year. The truck constantly vapor locked in the summer when pulling a hill. He tried the aluminum foil fix, clothespins and all the home spun fixes, as well as replaced the fuel pump, filters, checked gas line and gas tank and carburetor. None of the mechanics in Moab were ever able to fix it and he finally had an electric fuel pump installed which fixed (albeit with a bandaid?) the problem. So in the interest of keeping the old gal on the road it was worth it. I might add he never had a vapor locking problem again.
