That may have been true for the years you mention, but the frames, and most other components have changed several times over since the 1993 Ram.
You're now talking apples to oranges as I doubt that there are any Detroit production machines older than 5-6 years old, in fact I doubt if you can find a working lath in one of their plants, that's why most of the lathes are from the '30's they are an obsolete machine.
It's not greed it's called profit and there hasn't been any since 2004. With increasing legacy costs, government regulations and environmental requirements, they have been fighting a losing battle against subsidized imports who are using a non-union labor force to assemble the cheaper imported parts.
