Although I am a long time reader this is the first time I've posted. I'm not one to flame people over the internet but I believe the more informed folks can be the better...

I think this guy from Florida taught at the Rod Blogojevich School of Doing Business...

In Spring of 2007, I started communicating with this guy when he had an earlier truck he had rebuilt for sale on Ebay. Don't know if you'll remember but it was the plain jane beige. He said this was his first and probably the only one he would do - sort of for the fun of it... The truck had a reserve of approximately $12k and sold for approximately $18k. Although I bid, I was not the winner. I wrote the guy to congratulate him on his sale and to suggest that if he were to ever build another, I would like to engage him to build it for me at a fixed price. Several weeks/months later, he called or emailed and said he would be interested. We talked about what year I would like to start with and axle ratio, etc, etc. Then we talked price and his asking price was $25k... I took a deep breath as that that was quite a bit higher than $12-18k. I told him very clearly, that that was the most I could afford and no more... So several weeks later, he says he's got a base truck - a '62 WM300 and a boxed 251 engine. He said he wanted to put the box engine in for $2k more. I told him I could afford no more and that since he was rebuilding the original engine anyway to just stick to that... He said that he would only put in the new engine and so I said o.k. but for the extra $2k I wanted it painted my color (green and black) not red and black which he wanted and I wanted glass with a slight tint in it and a couple of other minor wishes... About a week later he wrote me and said he was not interested in building me a truck any longer but would let me know before the truck went up for sale in case I wanted to take a look and make an offer... I wrote back apologizing for the failure of the negotiation and told him that I would be very interested in hearing from him when the truck was done so I could come take a look.

I called him twice during the build period (May to Oct/Nov) to inquire on the status of the project - so I could make plans to come out for a look-see. He reiterated that he would let me know when the truck was finished.

Then a couple months later the truck showed up on Ebay out of the blue and he had a reserve of something like $38K - think it got sold to someone in the Middle East.

So now he's back with the 3rd or 4th truck of the line (he was going to do one only) and he's asking $50k.

I know that it is what the market will bear and I'm not talking about that - just know that he might be the same kind of mechanic as he is a business man.

My $0.02...

BTW - about 6mos ago I found a '56 C3 for sale here in OR that I am now the proud owner of...

Happy Holidays,

Ron E.
