lockers engage both sides of an axle in the differential to give you positive traction. ARB lockers are actuated by air from a small compact compressor on the truck, and controlled by an electrical switch normally mounted in the cab. Use two switches, and you control front and rear lockers independently. When you have lockers disengaged while in 4WD, you don't "push" through turns or break traction when you don't want to. When lockers are engaged, tracking is greatly increased. ARB allows you to move in and out of being 'locked' as your position and road conditions change moment by moment. A switchback road is a classic example. In other words, when used properly, it greatly improves control in 4WD. I have them front and rear on my CJ7 and wouldn't be without it.
