I have read this post with interest, I am in the parts business and what I see is customers that come unglued because the parts for their foriegn cars are for the most part are quite a bit more money than american built vehicles. also we have to look at the expense and complication of the various systems on these new vehicles of all types. most families I know cant afford $500.00 plus for a fuel pump replacement. I dont see how my 68 Valiant with a 318 that got 26 mpg(after a little bit of inexpensive tinkering) is any worse than my wifes 04 stratus that gets 27 mpg. I also put more miles on the valiant than the stratus will ever see. Also cars that dont change every couple of years are alot easier to fix for the majority of Americans that are handier with real tools than computers. I am not sayng computers are bad but simple isnt bad either.
